When you have a quick-witted mouse, a deep dark woods, and a monster, you pretty much have all of the ingredients you need for an interesting and appealing book. That's certainly true when you frame them in colorful and engaging illustrations. And it's absolutely true if the story is presented with a strong and rhythmic read-aloud rhyme scheme. This is fun and silly and full of energy, just like the kids you'll read it to. A nice find.

The board version of this book is perfect for little ones. Our 3.5 month old was captivated by the book, and able to turn the pages. She was stroking the pages with the full page illustrations on, which is about as much approval as you can get from a 15 week old! Perfect if you live anywhere near a Forestry Commission site with a Gruffalo trail, just so you know the story as an adult! Overall, I can definitely see this becoming a firm favourite for the next few years, and can now understand why The Gruffalo is so popular!

Ever popular with young children . The story takes the journey of a mouse travelling through a wood and encountering many different woodland creatures in their natural habitat and using cunning to outwit those animals who want to eat him. He does this by describing an unlikely creature who , the mouse then meets and then outwits to escape the wood before finding his goal, food (a nut). Enjoyed by all children I have read it to who love to join in with the rhyming words.

My toddler loves this book! Great size and thanks to the hard cover, it is less likely to get damaged or creased corners when it is bashed around. Highly recommend as you can make the story quite interactive when reading to little ones if you make the animal sounds together.

Writing about the Winter Nature Book, and not the story book....... my 4 yr old Grandson enjoys this book very much (enjoys anything with stickers really), and it has made him quite a bit more observant when out for a walk. Its also really good for reminding his adults to make a walk more educational and not just focus on the exercise. The only real gripe I have, and it is annoying, is that the stickers really aren't very good at adhering to the pages...we now tick the circle before we put the sticker in, as its the only real way to tell whether something has been noted before because you can't rely on the sticker to stay there. This is quite frustrating for him because the tableau pages keep destroying themselves after he has decorated them...

I must have ordered the board book instead of the paper one by mistake!!
But I'm so glad I did. It's a beautiful little book and my younger Grandson loved it 💙
Great for his little fingers at 3 years old. I had been trying to get him involved with books for a while and this and a few others have helped immensely! 😍

I searched for a new kind of stories that will engage and entertain my child. Traditional stories sometimes have too much violence and while I know sooner or later children have to face it I want to start with something different first. Found the Julia Donaldson series. This one is one of the best books. Story is cleverly written, the pictures are fun. My child loves it. We watch the movie and once we get familiar with the characters we read the book. The series and this book in particular help me introduce my child to books and reading stories.

The Gruffalo wasn't around when my children were young but I had seen the animation of this book and have been waiting for my grand daughter to be old enough to make the purchase. There are lots of cute, okay books out there for pre-schoolers but, for me, this one stands out from the crowd like Winnie the Witch and Dear Zoo. A really good children's book with just the right amount of 'scare' factor (all those terrible tusks and purple prickles all over his back). It would seem so simple to write a children's book but when the occasional brilliant one comes along it makes me realise what a specialist skill this is! Great, great - I cannot wait to read it out loud!

Oh, by the way - I wouldn't go for the versions of these books with all the 'bells and whistles' - just cuddle up and read!!

What can I say except another great book by Julia Donaldson! It tells the wonderful story of a brave little mouse, a great confidence booster for any child as well as great fun to read. Again this book is written in rhyme which is very helpful for children when learning to read. They will soon be remembering the last word of some lines and will want to say them. Even before your child is ready to read they will enjoy you talking about the pictures which tell a lovely story on their own.

Love this rhyming book... my daughter loves it too... the best part is that as a parent you can skip a page or two without little ones spotting to shorten the bed time book if you want! Versatility and a lovely tale!!
